Best Aptos (APT) wallet in 2026

Aptos is a Move-based network with a keypair account model — not a standard seed-phrase chain. These are the wallets that handle APT correctly, verified in August 2026.

Our verdict

Petra is the best Aptos wallet for most people: it is the Aptos Foundation's official wallet, handles the account model cleanly and supports staking. Martian is the strongest alternative with a slick interface. For long-term storage, Ledger supports APT via its app — pair it with Petra for the interface. APT is not EVM-compatible, so MetaMask cannot hold it.

Best overallPetra — The official Aptos Foundation wallet; clean UX, staking and hardware pairing.
Best mobileMartian — Strong mobile app with a polished interface and staking support.
Best hardwareLedger — Ledger supports APT via its app; the device holds the keys.
Best specialised optionPontem Wallet — An open-source Aptos wallet built for dApp users.

Aptos wallets at a glance

Why Aptos wallet support differs

Aptos is built on the Move language with an object/account model that is fundamentally different from Ethereum. Accounts are keypairs, and while wallets show a recovery phrase, the derivation is Aptos-specific — the phrase restores in Aptos wallets, not in MetaMask. That single fact explains most confusion around ‘Aptos wallets’.

The ecosystem is young but consolidated: Petra (official), Martian and Pontem cover the vast majority of users, and all three support the same account model.

Custody explained

All wallets here are self-custody: you hold the keys. Holding APT on Bitvavo or Finst is custodial — those exchanges store your coins for you and are the practical place to buy and sell, but you do not control the keys. Use them to buy; move what you keep into your own wallet.

Backup & recovery

Petra, Martian, Pontem and Nightly all present a recovery phrase at account creation. The Aptos-specific detail: the phrase restores the account in any Aptos-compatible wallet because they share the same derivation — a genuinely useful escape hatch if one app disappears. There is no passphrase layer on top, so the phrase alone is the whole backup.

Ledger uses its 24-word phrase with optional passphrase for APT — the most robust option here.

Test recovery before depositing a large amount: create the wallet, note the phrase, wipe the app, restore, and confirm the balance.

Setup in practice

  1. Install Petra (extension or mobile) and create an account.
  2. Write down the recovery phrase and store it offline.
  3. Optionally connect a Ledger for cold signing.
  4. Generate an APT receiving address.
  5. Send a small test amount from the exchange first, then the rest.

Where to buy APT

Both major Dutch exchanges list Aptos. Bitvavo and Finst offer APT trading with free SEPA/iDEAL deposits, MiCA authorisation (AFM) and withdrawals to external wallets. See our dedicated Aptos buying guide for the fee comparison.

Withdrawing APT to self-custody

Withdraw APT to your wallet address on the Aptos network — never another network. Bitvavo charges only the current network fee; Finst adds a €2.50 baseline per crypto withdrawal.

How to choose: five questions

  1. Official or alternative? Petra is the Aptos Foundation’s official wallet; Martian is the polished alternative.
  2. Staking? Both support non-custodial Aptos staking.
  3. Hardware planned? Ledger supports APT via its app; pair it with Petra.
  4. Move-ecosystem dApps? Petra has the deepest dApp integration.
  5. Backup model? Both use BIP39 phrases; Ledger adds a 24-word phrase with optional passphrase.

Petra — the official Aptos wallet

Best for: most APT users. Price: free (browser/mobile).

Petra is the Aptos Foundation’s official wallet: clean account management, non-custodial staking and Ledger pairing. Standard BIP39 phrase.

Pros: official; staking; dApp support. Cons: hot wallet; no passphrase.

Who it’s for: the default Aptos wallet.

Martian — the polished alternative

Best for: users who prefer Martian’s interface. Price: free.

Martian offers a slick mobile-first UX with staking and dApp support on the same BIP39 standard.

Pros: polished UX; staking; mobile. Cons: younger ecosystem than Petra.

Who it’s for: users who want a modern alternative with the same recovery standard.

Pontem — the power-user option

Best for: Move developers and power users. Price: free.

Pontem is a Move-first wallet with deep tooling for the Aptos/Sui ecosystem — more developer-oriented than Petra or Martian.

Pros: Move tooling; multichain (Aptos + Sui). Cons: less beginner-friendly.

Who it’s for: developers and power users in the Move ecosystem.

Ledger — cold storage for APT

Best for: long-term savings. Price: from ~€59–79.

Ledger’s native Aptos app keeps keys offline; pair with Petra for the interface. 24-word phrase with optional passphrase.

Pros: native APT; keys offline; passphrase. Cons: closed-source firmware.

Who it’s for: anyone holding meaningful APT.

Aptos staking, in plain terms

Aptos uses proof of stake with delegated staking:

Because the lock is minimal, self-custody staking is the better default for anyone holding APT beyond a month.

The Move ecosystem, briefly

Aptos is built on the Move language (same family as Sui) with a focus on throughput and safe asset handling. For a holder, the practical consequences:

First-week checklist for new APT holders

  1. Create the wallet (Petra or Martian) and write down the phrase — on paper, offline, before depositing anything.
  2. Test recovery — reset the app, restore from the phrase, confirm the balance appears.
  3. Send a small test transfer from the exchange and verify it lands in your APT address on the Aptos network.
  4. Move the real balance only after the test confirms.
  5. If you stake, check your validator’s terms — unbonding is short, but reward reliability varies.

This routine takes twenty minutes and prevents the majority of APT losses — the ones caused by untested phrases and network mistakes, not by hacks.

Where to buy APT

Exchanges are not wallets

Bitvavo and Finst are custodial exchanges: they hold your coins on your behalf. Buying and selling is their purpose; the coins remain under the exchange's control until withdrawn. An exchange account and a wallet are different products — this site never ranks an exchange as a 'wallet'.

How we evaluate

Every recommendation is based on our published methodology: we separate self-custody wallets, hardware wallets, custodial exchanges and buying platforms, and score each with its own criteria. Frequently asked questions

Can I use MetaMask for Aptos?

No. Aptos is a Move-based network, not EVM. MetaMask cannot hold APT — you need an Aptos wallet such as Petra or Martian.

How does an Aptos recovery phrase work?

Aptos accounts are keypair-based. Petra and the other Aptos wallets show a recovery phrase at creation; that phrase restores the same account in other Aptos wallets (Martian, Pontem, Nightly). It is not the same derivation as Ethereum's, so it will not restore in EVM wallets.

Which hardware wallets support APT?

Ledger supports Aptos through its app. Trezor does not support Aptos.

Where can I buy APT in Europe?

Both Bitvavo and Finst list Aptos with free SEPA/iDEAL deposits and MiCA authorisation (AFM). Withdraw to your own wallet after buying.
