A breast pocket wallet is also known as a check book wallet, secretary wallet or a European style wallet . It is a long, leather wallet typically worn in suit breast pockets. These wallets are not as common as they once were. Instead of suits being the norm, jeans have become the clothing staple over the last 50 years. And fashion has seen wallets get smaller to fit in smaller pockets over the last century.
The most notable difference of a breast pocket wallet is its size. A classic breast pocket wallet can be up to 3 inches longer than a bi fold. This allows you to store plenty of cards, and even store notes without folding them. The length is similar in breast pocket wallets, but some are slimmer than others. This will suit some breast pockets better.
Some travel wallets are similar in size to the breast pocket wallet, around 7-8 inches long. These travel wallets hold passports and have space for boarding passes.
This size difference means that they are not as popular as a smaller tri fold or bi fold wallet.
Their size is reflective of the period that they came out of. Where everyone wore a suit and jacket. The upper classes carried large wallets for all of their personal items and to show their status to those they had dealings with.
This size means that they can only be warn in a deep pocket like a suit breast pocket. They are often too long for front pockets and can’t be sat on in a back pocket.
This exclusivity adds to the image. Masculine and in control. You could imagine James Bond elegantly reaching into his suit pocket, on his way to getting the girl and outplaying the bad guy. Not fishing around his back pocket and accidentally grabbing his phone or keys.
Some beast pocket wallets can hold passports and boarding passes for the dapper traveller. Some can hold check books, but most hold a generous amount of cards with room to identify and access them when needed. There is also a couple of compartments for currency and receipts.
Because of their size they work well as a dedicated work wallet. Creating a great impression on clients, with plenty of room for business items that all fits into your suit pocket.
For all these reasons we really like breast pocket wallets. The most expensive breast pocket wallets we have seen are the Ferragamo brand and cost approximately $400 USD. Although you don’t have to spend that much and places like Amazon.com have a great range of breast pocket wallets for all occasions and different price points.
